Shambhala Day
Sun February 14th: 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM In Room(s): Main Shrine Room Shambhala Day is a celebration of the Shambhala New Year. The date is in accordance with the new year of the Tibetan calendar. Shambhala Centers around the world gather via a telephone link to hear an address by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, usually from Halifax. The traditional blessing that concludes the formal event is followed by festivities with families and friends. Shambhala Day marks the beginning of a new year according to the Tibetan lunar calendar. As a time of renewal and "fresh start," we are encouraged to celebrate together. We can cheer up. We can appreciate our lives even if we feel we might be living in an imperfect situation. Appropriately, the traditional greeting on this occasion is "Cheerful Shambhala Day!” Since the ancient days of King Gesar, and perhaps before, the Tibetan calendar has always been based on a great twelve-year cycle. Each year is named after an animal: mouse, ox, tiger, hare, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, bird, dog, and pig. In the eleventh century, a sixty-year cycle was introduced by combining the names of the animals with the five elements: wood, fire, earth, iron, and water. February 14, 2010 marks the first day of the Iron Tiger year. The itinerary for the 2010 Shambhala Day celebration is as follows: 9-10 Sadhana of Mahamudra Practice 10-1030 Recognition and Oaths 1030-11 Birthday Sadhana 11-1130 Membership Oath for Members (who wish to take the oath) 12 Roll Call of all the Centers world-wide, Sakyong's address (from retreat), President Reoch times after this are approximate... 1230 Shambhala International Annual Fundraising Pitch and Q & A 1255 Giving out of practice books to all for the New Year 115 Throwing the I Ching for Center for the New Year 130 Potluck lunch, conversation and merriment There will also be a celebratory dinner at Sen Yai Sen Lek from 6-9pm.
